SARAH'S POV

I kept walking. A narrow walkway, lined with small plants on both sides. The air felt calm… but my mind wasn’t. I could feel him beside me.

I looked down. Then… I looked at him. Then again, quickly looked down. “Why am I even doing this…” i whispered to myself.

He was still on his call. Calm. Serious. I took another step. And then..He looked at me. Suddenly. Our eyes met. And for a second I forgot how to breathe. His eyes were Deep. Something inside me shifted.

I quickly looked down and walked past him. I had just crossed him When suddenly, My neck jerked back. “Ahh!” I gasped. Something had pulled it. Hard enough to stop me.

My mind didn’t think. It reacted.

“These Men!!”

I turned around instantly. Anger rising in seconds. My hand shot up in the air. “How dare..!” But then I saw it. My scarf…was stuck on a small metal water tap beside the path. Not him.

Just…My stupidity. My brain went blank. My hand was still raised midair. And he was looking at me. Silent. Slightly confused. My eyes moved slowly…From the tap…To him…Then to my own hand. Still ready to slap him.

“Oh no…”My lips parted. My heart started racing. “What do I do now…?” This is so embarrassing. “I should say sorry…Just say sorry.”

But Nothing came out. Instead, In full panic… Full embarrassment… Without thinking

I SLAPPED HIM..!!

The sound echoed. Sharp. For a second, Even the air froze. My own hand shocked me.

“What did I just do ?!” My eyes widened.

I quickly brought my hand to my mouth. Covering it. My fingers pressing against my lips like I could undo it.

“Oh my God…” I whispered. Why did I slap him?! He didn’t even do anything! I glanced at him. He was still standing there. Frozen. Eyes on me.

I couldn’t even face him. I quickly looked at my scarf. Untangled it in a hurry. My hands trembling. And the moment it got free, I turned. And ran. No sorry. Nothing. Just..Ran. As fast as I could.

My face burning. My heart racing. My brain screaming…You just slapped a stranger for no reason! I didn’t stop. Didn’t look back. Because if I did, I might actually die of embarrassment.

And behind me He stayed there. Probably still trying to understand, Why a girl came… Almost blamed him… And then confidently slapped him anyway.

I ran. Straight into the house. Didn’t stop. I entered the drawing room almost running And suddenly, I stopped abruptly. Almost crashing into someone. I stepped back quickly. It was Papa.

He looked at me, confused. “What happened? Why are you running like this?”

I froze. My mind went blank. Words refused to come out properly. “I…I… I… actually… I just”

Now I couldn’t even speak. “I just came after so long and I haven’t freshened up yet, so I was just… going to freshen up…” I said in one breath, still not making full sense.

Papa raised an eyebrow. “Okay… but why were you running for that?”

I opened my mouth. Closed it again.

“I just… I mean… I…” I stammered again, completely lost.

He looked at me for a second. Then shook his head slightly. “Okay, okay,” he said. “Go, freshen up. Then come downstairs. We’ll have lunch.”

I nodded quickly.“Yes, yes, okay!”

And before he could ask anything else, I ran upstairs again. I entered my room. Closed the door. And jumped straight onto the bed. Face down. My arms and legs spread out like I had just finished a marathon.

“What did I just do…?” I muffled into the pillow. I turned to the side. Then sat up. Then lay down again. My hands went to my face. I covered it completely.

“Oh my God…” Why did I slap him?! He didn’t even do anything! I knew he didn’t do anything! Then why?! I sat up again, frustrated. My hair falling all over my face.

“This is so embarrassing…” I took a deep breath.

“Okay… okay… calm down.” I looked at the ceiling. “What am I going to do now…?” I took a deep breath and said myself “Let’s just… deal with it later.”

I got up and picked out my clothes, Walked into the bathroom. Even while changing, Even while washing my face My mind was stuck on one thing. That slap. My expression in the mirror was enough to tell the whole story. Pure embarrassment.

“I can’t believe this…”nAfter getting ready, I walked out wearing a simple, comfortable outfit. I stood in front of the mirror for a second. Looked at myself. Still embarrassed.

“Act normal,” I whispered to myself. “Just act normal.”

I stepped out of my room. Walked towards the stairs. Each step carrying confusion, regret, and overthinking.

I reached downstairs. Papa was sitting on the sofa. He looked at me and smiled. “Oh, you’re ready?”

I nodded. “Yes.”

“Good,” he said. “Come, let’s have lunch.” I nodded again and started walking towards the dining area.

And then I heard footsteps. Papa turned. I turned too.And My heart stopped. It was him. The same man. The one I slapped. He was walking in calmly. Like nothing had happened.

Papa smiled. “Oh, you’re here! I was waiting for you. Come, let’s have lunch.”

I stood there frozen. “Oh my God..!”My eyes widened slightly.

I looked at him. He looked at me. And the moment his eyes met mine I turned my face away instantly. My expression pure embarrassment. He’s going to tell Papa. I’m dead. I didn’t even dare to look at him again. My fingers tightened slightly. My heartbeat getting faster again.

And then Papa spoke. “Oh, I forgot to introduce you both…”

“Papa!” I suddenly spoke, cutting him off. Both of them looked at me. My heart was racing.

“I think… my phone is ringing,” I said quickly.

Papa frowned. “I don’t think your phone is ringing. I didn’t hear anything.”

“It is!” I said immediately. “It’s on silent…i think. I should just check.” Without waiting I turned. And I almost ran.

“Arey, where are you going?” Papa’s voice came from behind. But I didn’t stop. I went straight upstairs. Into my room. Closed the door. And dropped onto the bed.

My hands went straight to my face. “Oh my God…” I sat there, frozen. My brain replaying everything. The slap. His face. That moment.

“Why did I do that…?” I whispered. I felt like disappearing.

He’s downstairs. What if he tells Papa? What if Papa asks me? What will I even say?!

I lay back on the bed, staring at the ceiling.

“This is so embarrassing…”

AUTHOR'S POV

Downstairs Vijay stood there, completely confused. His brows slightly furrowed.

“What just happened…?”he muttered.

He clearly hadn’t heard any phone.

“If her phone was in silent how can she heard?” Vijay murmured. “Then why did she run like that?”

His gaze shifted towards the man standing a few steps away. The man stood calmly. Hands in his pockets.. But there was a faint expression on his face A slight curve at the corner of his lips. A small, controlled smile. As if He knew exactly why she had run.

Vijay looked between the stairs and him again. Still confused. Then shook his head.

“I’ll just check on her,” he said and started walking upstairs. The man didn’t move.

Vijay reached the door and knocked. “Sarah?”

Inside She quickly sat up. Took a deep breath. And opened the door.

“Yes?” She said.

“What happened?” Vijay asked. “Why did you run like that?”

She hesitated for a second. Then lied.

“Actually… I got some work from New York. My friend sent something… I have to prepare a presentation. So I just came to check.” Vijay looked at her, not fully convinced.

“What are you saying? You just came after so long, and now you’re busy with work?”

She looked down slightly. “I’ll just take five minutes… then I’ll come.”

Vijay sighed. “Okay. Five minutes. Then come downstairs.”

She nodded quickly. “Yes.”

He gave her one last look. Then turned and went back downstairs. The man was still there. Vijay walked towards him. But before he could say anything The man spoke.

“Uncle, I think I should leave.”

Vijay looked at him, surprised. “What? You just came after so many days, and now you’re leaving?”

“It’s important,” he said simply. “I got a call. I have to go.”

Vijay shook his head slightly. “You always do this,” he said. “Work, work, work.”

Then after a pause, he added “Tomorrow, you have to come early. No excuses.”

The man looked at him.

“There’s a puja,” Vijay continued. “For Madhu.” His voice softened a little.

“You have to be here from morning. There’s a lot to do. And I don’t want to hear any reason.”

He nodded. “I’ll come.”

“Good,” Vijay said. “Now go if you must.” The man gave a small nod. And walked away.

But before leaving His eyes lifted once. Towards the stairs. And then He left.

Upstairs Sarah was still sitting on her bed. Overthinking everything. Completely unaware That the man she slapped… She let out a long, slow breath. Then closed her eyes for a second. She couldn’t hide here forever.

Gathering whatever courage she had left, she sat up straight. Her fingers clenched slightly on the bedsheet. Then she stood up slowly. She walked towards the door and Opened it. And stepped out. Her steps were slow. Her face still carrying that same embarrassed expression. Eyes slightly down.

She reached the stairs. And began to walk down. Step by step. Almost nervously. Her eyes lifted And searched. Left. Right. Everywhere. But He wasn’t there. She paused for a second. Looked again. Still no sign of him. And then A small, relieved smile appeared on her lips. Soft.. He’s gone… She exhaled lightly.

“Your work is done?” Vijay’s voice came from the living area.

She looked at him. Nodded quickly. “Yes… yes.”

“Good,” he said. “Come, let’s have lunch.”She nodded again.

They both walked towards the dining table sat down.Vijay began serving the food. “Eat,” he said gently.

Sarah picked up the spoon. But her mind

Was still not fully there. Thank God he left…But then another thought came, Where did he go…? She shook it off slightly and focused on her plate.

They ate in silence for a few moments. The kind of silence that was uncomfortable. After a pause, Vijay spoke. “Tomorrow… there’s a puja.” Sarah looked up.

“For Madhu.” Her expression changed instantly. The softness returned to her face. Her eyes lowered slightly. “Oh…”

“You’ll sit for it,” Vijay added quietly.

She nodded.“Yes.” There was a brief silence again.

Then Vijay tried to lighten the moment. “How’s the food?”

She gave a small smile.“It’s good.”

He nodded.“Hmm.”

After finishing the meal, Vijay leaned back slightly. “Now go and rest,” he said. “You’ve travelled a lot.”

Sarah nodded. “Okay.”

She stood up. Gave him a small smile. And walked towards the stairs again.
