SARAH'S POV
The rituals ended. The red water… the footsteps… the smiles…Everything. I stood there. Looking at everyone around me.They were all smiling. Warm. Welcoming. But for me…Like I had stepped into a world I didn’t know.
What is this place going to be for me?
Home… or just another stop?
“Let’s go inside,” my father’s voice came softly from beside me. I didn’t reply.
I just nodded a little.
We both turned towards the entrance. I was about to step in...When suddenly The sound of a car broke the moment. A car entering through the main gate. Everyone turned. Including me.
A deep navy blue Fortuner slowly moved inside. But what caught my attention wasn’t the car. It was my father. The way his face changed. A sudden smile. He left my side. And walked towards the car.
I blinked. Confused. I stood there, watching him go. My eyebrows frowned slightly, my forehead tightening as thoughts rushed in. I crossed my arms lightly. Still staring at the car.
It stopped near the main gate. A little far from the entrance.I tried to see inside.
But couldn’t. The glass… the angle…
Nothing was clear. Only a shadow of someone in the driver’s seat.
My father reached there. Still smiling. As if he had been waiting for this person.
Meanwhile The helpers quietly picked up my luggage and the two girls went with them and took it inside. Other servant went inside the house for their respective works.
I just stood there. Watching. Waiting.
Trying to understand Who is that person?
The car stopped. The door opened.
A man in black stepped out of the car dark glasses hiding his eyes.
For a second Everything felt… still.
Even from a distance, I could see his attire. Black suit.White shirt with a Black tie. Black shoes. Everything about him was neat.
He closed the car door calmly. My father was already standing in front of him. And then Something unexpected happened. He bent down. And touched my father’s feet. I blinked. What…? I wasn’t expecting that.
Slowly, he straightened up and removed his glasses, holding them in his hand.
I still couldn’t see his face properly from this distance. But something about him Felt different.
I stood there. Alone. Just watching them. Trying to understand Who is HE? They started talking. At first, I didn’t pay much attention. I thought...Okay, just a normal conversation. But then, Minutes passed. Five minutes. Ten minutes. More. And they were still talking.
I was still standing there. Alone. My eyes stayed fixed on them. My fingers slowly crossed over each other. My lips pressed together.
“Aise bhi kaun aa gaya…” I whispered under my breath.
Who is this person… that Papa just forgot me?
I had just reached. After so long. I needed him. Even if I didn’t say it. Even if I didn’t show it. But he was just standing there.Talking with him. Something inside me felt… off. Strange.
My eyebrows frowned slightly. A small irritation rising slowly. Is he really that important? And then A feeling I didn’t expect at all Came quietly.
"Jealousy"
I didn’t even understand why. But I felt it.
I let out a slow breath. Tried to calm my thoughts. Then I looked at them again.
This time Both of them had turned. And now… They were walking towards me.
I straightened a little without realizing.
My eyes stayed on them. But before they could reach...Those two girls came near me.
"Aap abhi tak yahin khadi ho?” one of them asked quickly. "Chalo hum aapko aapka room dikha dete hain."
I looked at them. Before I could reply Their expressions suddenly changed.
“Oh sorry!” the other one said.
“I think… aapko Hindi nahi aati?”
A small smile appeared on my lips.
Soft.
“No, no,” I said gently.
“Mujhe Hindi bahut achi tarah aati hai… ”
Both of them froze. Their eyes widened.
"Aapko Hindi aati hai?” they asked almost together.
I nodded slightly.
“Haan,” I said. “Meri Maa ne sikhaya hai mujhe sab kuch… aur main hindi mein kaafi comfortable hun”
For a second They just looked at me.“Wow… Aapki pronounciation bahut achi hai lagta nahi ki aap pehli baar India aaye ho” one of them said, almost amazed.
I smiled and said "kyunki main aur meri maa wahan pe Hindi mein hi baat karte the taaki main hindi fluently sikh sakun."
“That’s great!” both of them said. And I smiled. They smiled back. We even laughed a little.
Then suddenly One of the girls held my hand. I looked down at our hands for a second. A little surprised. Then I looked at her.
“Come,” she said warmly. “Let’s go to your room.” She gently started pulling me. I didn’t resist. But as she started taking me inside..I turned my head. And looked back. They were still coming. Closer now.
I turned my face forward. And walked inside. The moment I stepped in I paused. The house… It was beautiful.
Not in a modern way. But in a way that felt warm. The interiors had a vintage touch wooden details, soft colors, traditional designs. Everything looked simple but delicate.
The girls were still holding my hand, pulling me gently.
“Come, come,” one of them said excitedly. They took me towards the stairs. I followed them. But my eyes
They kept moving everywhere. Taking in every detail. Every corner. This place… feels different.
We climbed up the stairs. My hand lightly touching the railing. When we reached upstairs They didn’t stop. They took me straight to a room.
“This one!” one of them said and pushed the door open.
I stepped inside. And stopped again. The room was… Beautiful. A neatly decorated bed, soft curtains, simple furniture everything arranged perfectly. And my luggage was already there.
I turned towards them.
“It’s your room,” one of the girls said with a proud smile.
“We both, along with Vijay chacha, decorated it.”
I raised my eyebrows slightly.
“Oh… really?” I smiled. “That’s nice.”
Then I tilted my head a little.
“By the way, you both should introduce yourselves first.”
They looked at each other. Then suddenly “Arey haan, hum toh bhool hi gaye!” they said together. I couldn’t help but smile.
“I’m Ahana,” one of them said.
“And I’m Arushi,” the other added quickly.
I gave a small, soft smile.
“And I’m Sarah.”
Both said teasingly "Arey Hume toh pata hi nhi tha..."
For a second We just looked at each other. Then all three of us laughed.
Ahana spoke again, a little excited...
“We’re twin sisters. Even though we don’t look alike… we are twins.”
Before I could say anything, Arushi suddenly grabbed my hand and pulled me towards the window.
“Look!” she said. She pointed outside.
“There, that house is ours. We live there. We are neighbours… and Vijay chacha is very close to us.”
I followed her gaze. A house stood not too far. I nodded slightly. “Okay…”
Then Arushi turned towards me again, a little hesitant this time.
“You are older than us,” she said softly. “We’re in 9th standard… so can we call you didi?”
I smiled. This time… warmly.
“Of course,” I said. “You can call me that… or even by my name. Whatever you like.”
Their faces lit up instantly.
And in that moment For the first time since I arrived.. I didn’t feel completely alone.
Ahana looked at me and smiled.
“
I think you must be tired,” she said softly. “You should freshen up first.”
I shook my head lightly. “No… not now,” I replied. “Actually, I want to explore the house first.” My eyes moved towards the window.
“There’s a garden outside, right? It looks really beautiful… I want to see everything.”
Both of them looked at each other and smiled. “That’s exciting,” Arushi said. “Let’s go!” They walked ahead. I followed. We stepped out of my room.
Ahana pointed to the room beside mine.
“This is a guest room.” Then another one “That’s a storeroom.” We walked a little further.
There was another room but Locked. Arushi stopped there. “We don’t know about this room,” she said quietly. “We’ve never seen it open.”
Something about that felt… strange.
I looked at the door for a second.
Then looked away. Not important right now.
We went downstairs. The house opened into a large living area. Big sofas. Wooden furniture. Everything looked traditional… yet elegant.
Then I saw a room. Without thinking, I stepped inside.
“This is Vijay chacha’s room,” Ahana said.
But I had already walked in.
And then I froze.
Right in front of me There was a wall. Filled with photographs. My eyes landed on one. A couple... My father. And… My mother whom I've just seen in pictures.
A soft breath left my lips. Then another frame. Me. A childhood picture in New York.
I stepped closer. My fingers moved slightly, as if I wanted to touch it… but I didn’t. And then Another photo. Me…
And Maa.(Madhurima). I was in my school uniform. She was standing with me, smiling softly.
That same smile… That same warmth.
My eyes blurred instantly. I didn’t even realize when they filled with tears.
A lump formed in my throat. Everything came back in a second. Memories. Her voice. Her presence.
Then I looked around the room His wardrobe. His bed. Everything felt… personal.
“Are you crying?” Arushi’s voice broke my thoughts.
I quickly looked away.
“No… no,” I said softly. “It’s just… emotional.”
They nodded gently. I was thankful for that. But inside I knew.
These photos… Maa sent them. And he… He kept them.
We moved out of the room. Next was the kitchen. A few helpers were working there. They looked at me and smiled. I gave a small smile back.
Then The puja room. I stepped inside slowly. It was peaceful. Soft light filled the room. Small idols of gods were placed neatly on a wooden platform.
Fresh flowers surrounded them. A diya was burning quietly.
For a moment Everything inside me felt still. Like all the noise had paused. I didn’t speak. I just stood there.
We moved ahead. The dining area. A large table. Everything arranged perfectly.
“Let’s go to the garden!” Ahana said excitedly.
We went out from home but I was searching my father but didn't see him and stepped outside. The garden was beautiful.
Flowers blooming in different colors.
A soft breeze passed by.
I walked slowly. Touching leaves. Looking around. We laughed.
Talked. It felt light. After some time, we started walking back.
Just then Someone called them from a distance. Their mother. They both turned. “Oh we’ll be back!” they said quickly. “You go to your room, we'll come back.”
I nodded.“Okay.”
And just like that I was alone again.
I started walking back slowly. But I noticed. And then I saw a MAN. He was the same man.
The one my father had walked away to talk to…
He was standing a little ahead. Alone. Phone pressed to his ear. Talking. I slowed down. My steps quieter now. As I got closer I saw him clearly for the first time.
He was tall… much taller than I expected. His posture straight.
Confident. His sleeves slightly folded, revealing strong forearms… veins faintly visible. His beard well kept.
Sharp. His jawline defined.
And then His eyes. I don’t know why
But they didn’t feel ordinary. Deep.
Like they carried too many things. There was no restlessness in them. The kind that makes you pause without knowing why.
I didn’t stop walking.
But my eyes Stayed on him.
Not because I wanted to stare.
But because Something about him didn’t let me look away.
My heartbeat felt a little… different.
