The car door closed softly. The driver quickly stepped forward, taking Sarah’s luggage and placing it carefully in the back. The trunk shut with a quiet sound.
Vijay opened the door for her.“Sit,” he said gently. Sarah nodded and got in without saying much. She sat by the window. Vijay walked around the car, opened the other door, and sat beside her.
The driver returned to his seat, started the engine, and slowly drove the car out of the airport.
For a few minutes..There was silence. Not the comfortable kind. But the kind that feels heavy… like there are too many words, yet none of them are being spoken. The sound of the engine filled the space between them.
Sarah looked outside. The city moved past her..busy roads, unknown faces, everything unfamiliar.Vijay glanced at her once… then looked away.He wanted to say something. But the words felt stuck.
Finally, he spoke. “I thought…” his voice was low, careful, “you would come earlier.”A small pause.“Before nine months.” His words hung in the air.
Sarah didn’t turn towards him. Her eyes remained fixed outside the window.
For a second, her lips curved slightly
A faint, almost bitter smile. “But I thought,” she replied calmly, “that I wouldn’t come at all.” Her voice wasn’t loud.
Then she added softly “But I remembered Maa’s words.”
Vijay’s fingers tightened slightly on his lap. The mention of Madhurima brought a quiet pain to his face. “What happened to Madhu…” he said slowly, his voice breaking just a little, “was unexpected.” His eyes grew moist.
Sarah blinked once. Her expression didn’t change much. “For you,” she said, still looking outside, “it was unexpected.” A small pause. “But for me…” Her voice lowered.“My whole world ended that day.”
He looked down for a moment, trying to hold himself together. “I’ve arranged a Puja for Madhu ,” he said after a while, his voice softer now. “It was supposed to happen earlier… but you didn’t come.”
There was no accusation in his tone.
Sarah finally shifted slightly. But she still didn’t look at him. “You also never came to see me,” she said.
This time, her voice carried something more. “I waited,” she continued slowly. “Every time.” Her fingers tightened around her phone. “At least once… I thought you would come.” A small pause. “I even asked you so many times on calls…” Her voice faded slightly.“But you never did.”
Silence filled the car again. This time heavier than before. Vijay closed his eyes for a second. “I know…” he said quietly. “I made mistakes.”His voice was filled with regret now. “But I never meant to hurt you.”
Sarah didn’t reply. She just looked outside.
"Some distance are not about space, they're built over time and breaking them ...is never easy..!!"
The silence stayed for a while. Then Sarah turned her head. For the first time since the conversation started, she looked at him.Vijay also looked at her Their eyes met. There was so much in that one moment.
Vijay swallowed slightly. His voice came out low, almost careful. “I hope…” he paused, as if choosing the right words, “one day you will forgive me.”
Sarah kept looking at him for a second.
Then Her gaze slowly dropped.
She looked down at her hands resting in her lap. A faint breath escaped her.
“Who am I…” she said softly, “to forgive you?”
Her voice wasn’t harsh. It was calm.
Honest. Vijay’s eyes lowered slightly. But before the silence could grow again
She continued.“But…” A small pause.
“I know… everything will be fine.” Her voice softened even more. “You don’t have to worry, Papa.”
That one word...Papa. It was simple. But it changed everything. Vijay looked at her again. His eyes filled again, but this time… there was a little peace in them. This was the beginning.
The car slowed down. Then stopped. Sarah’s eyes lifted slightly. Outside the window. A house stood quietly.nNot very big. Not modern. But… beautiful in its own way. It was an old, vintage-style home..A simple structure, with soft colors faded by time, yet still standing strong.
As the driver pressed the horn lightly, the main gate slowly opened. Vijay looked at her. “This is your home,” he said gently. Sarah didn’t reply. But her eyes… They said something else. Something mixed. Confusion. Distance. Curiosity.
The car moved forward slowly. As if even the moment needed time. It passed through the gate, crossed the small open space, and finally stopped near the entrance of the house. The place was decorated. Fresh flowers were tied along the doorway. A soft fragrance of incense filled the air. Everything looked… prepared. As if someone had been waiting for a long time.
But Sarah..Didn’t step out immediately. She stayed inside the car. Her hands rested in her lap. Her eyes lowered. She took a deep breath.
Vijay stepped out of the car. He walked around and came to her side. He opened the door. “Come,” he said softly. “It’s your home.”
Sarah looked up at him for a second. Then slowly stepped out. Her feet touched the ground carefully. As if she was stepping into something unknown.
She stood still. Right in front of the house. Her eyes moved slowly..Taking in everything. The walls. The decorations. The entrance. Every little detail.
Two young girls stood near the door.
Dressed simply, but neatly...holding a puja thali, ready for the rituals. They were smiling. Giggling softly. Curious eyes fixed on Sarah. A few men stood behind them..house helpers. Everyone was looking at her. With smiles.
But for Sarah..They were all strangers.
She looked at them. Like someone who doesn’t know where she belongs.
Vijay stepped slightly forward, with a smile.. “You can look as much as you want,” he said. “It’s all yours.”
Sarah didn’t respond immediately. Her eyes moved back to the house and she smiled a little. The word echoed in her mind...Home...Was it? Or was it just a place she was supposed to accept as one?
Behind her, Vijay watched silently.
Waiting. Not forcing.
Sarah took a small step forward.
Just one. The two girls standing near the entrance quickly moved closer, smiling. One of them lifted the puja thali slightly.
The soft flame of the diya flickered.
Sarah’s eyes immediately fell on it.
She observed everything carefully
The aarti diya glowing gently, Kumkum and chandan placed neatly, A little raw rice, And flower petals, ready to be showered.
For a moment, she just looked. Then
“Wait,” she said softly. The girls stopped.
Everyone looked at each other, confused. Her eyes were still on the thali. She understood. Even if she didn’t grow up here… She knew what this meant because her "Maa taught her everything..."
Slowly, she turned her head. Vijay was standing beside her.“Papa…” she said quietly.
Vijay looked at her.
“Yes?”
Sarah hesitated for a second.
Then asked “Can you do this… for me?”
For a moment Vijay didn’t understand.
Then it hit him. His eyes widened slightly.Emotion rose in his chest all at once. “How… can I do it?” he asked softly, almost unsure.
Sarah didn’t argue. Didn’t insist. She just lowered her gaze.
Without saying anything, he gently took the thali from the girl’s hands. He stood in front of Sarah. For a second… He just looked at her. His daughter. Standing at the door of his house. After so many years.A faint smile appeared on Sarah’s lips.
Vijay lifted the thali. His hands trembled slightly. He began the aarti. Slowly rotating the thali in front of her face. The diya’s light reflected in her eyes.
Then He took a little kumkum and chandan with his fingers. As he moved his hand towards her forehead...Sarah slowly closed her eyes.
He placed the tilak gently between her eyebrows. Right at the center. As he did that ...Sarah took her right hand softly behind her head, a natural gesture of respect. Then brought it back down.
Her eyes were still closed. For a moment
Everything felt silent. When Sarah opened her eyes..They were slightly wet. Vijay’s eyes too.
Vijay then picked up the flower petals. And gently showered them over her head. They fell softly on her hair, her shoulders…
Then Vijay stepped aside slightly. Sarah looked ahead. Near the entrance...A small pot filled with raw rice was placed. She looked at it. Then at Vijay.
“With your right foot,” he said gently.
She nodded.
Carefully, she lifted her foot… And pushed the pot lightly. The rice spilled forward as the pot rolled aside. As she stepped forward..She almost placed her left foot first. But one of the girls quickly said“No, no… right foot first.” Sarah paused.
Looked at her. Then quietly corrected herself. She stepped in with her right foot.Inside,A large plate filled with red Alta water was placed. Sarah looked at it for a second.
“Put your right foot first,” the girl guided softly. Sarah did as told. Then her left. The cool liquid touched her feet. Leaving a red tint. “Now walk,” the girl said. “Right… then left.” Sarah nodded.
She stepped forward. One step. Then another. As she walked,Red footprints formed behind her. Clear. Soft. Marking her entry. She stopped after a few steps. Her eyes slowly moved down. Looking at those footprints. Her footprints.
On the floor of this house.
Behind her, Vijay stood still. Watching. His chest felt heavy… But also light at the same time. Because for the first time After years...His house didn’t feel empty.
