Some memories don’t ask for permission before returning. They come quietly..and settle deep inside,as if they never left. And hers always began at the same place.

Flashback (Author's pov)

A quiet evening on the college campus. The kind of evening that feels like it will last forever. The sun was spreading a soft golden light across the ground. Students were laughing somewhere far away, voices fading in the background.

And there they were...Sitting close. From behind, it looked simple. A boy sitting on the low wall, and a girl leaning into him, her head resting gently on his shoulder. She closed her eyes for a second, breathing in the calm.

“Vijay…” she called softly. He turned his face slightly towards her and responded with,“Hmm?”

She smiled, a small, warm smile. “It’s been two years.”

“Two years of what?” he teased.

She lifted her head and looked at him, pretending to be serious. “Two years of tolerating you.”

He chuckled. “That’s funny. I remember it as two years of you not leaving me alone.” She hit his arm lightly. “Idiot.”

For a moment, everything felt easy.Like nothing could go wrong.

But then,Her smile slowly faded. Her fingers tightened around his sleeve.

“Vijay…” her voice changed, softer now, uncertain. “What will happen after this?”

He frowned slightly. “After what?”

“After college,” she said, looking straight ahead now. “This is our last year. In a few days… it’s all going to end.”

The wind picked up slightly, moving her hair across her face. “We won’t meet like this anymore,”

Silence settled between them. Vijay looked at her, really looked this time. He could see the fear she was trying to hide. So he did what he always did. He smiled.

“Madhu,” he said gently, “why are you thinking so much?” She didn’t respond.

“I’m here,” he added. “And as long as I’m here, nothing ends.”

She turned to him slowly. “You say that like it’s easy.”

“It is easy,” he replied. “We’ll manage everything.”

There was confidence in his voice. Or maybe… just hope.

“Promise?” she asked. Vijay paused for a second. Then he nodded. “Promise.”

She smiled again. And rested her head back on his shoulder. As if that was enough.

But promises don't always survive in reality....!!!

College ended. Goodbyes were said. And slowly everyone moved on. So did they. But not together anymore.Days turned into phone calls. Late-night conversations replaced evening meetings. And some frequent meetings!! Small words… trying to hold something big.

Then one day , The call felt different.

“Madhu…” Vijay’s voice came from the other side.Tired.Heavy.

She smiled instantly. “Hmm? What happened?”There was a pause.Longer than usual.

“I’m leaving my studies,” he said. Her smile disappeared.“What?” she was confused.

“I have to work,” he continued. “Things at home… they’re not good.”

She sat up straight. “Vijay, no...listen to me, we’ll figure something out"

“I already did,” he interrupted quietly. His voice wasn’t loud. But it was final.“I can’t continue like this,” he said. “My parents need me.”

With a heavy heart she said," okay, don't worry. I trust your decision but think once again ." Then the conversation went on.

Life moved. But not kindly. Vijay started working.Long hours. Less money. A life that didn’t wait for feelings. And Madhurima..She kept studying. But her heart was never fully there.

Until one evening... Madhu's father, Mr Devraj Sharma called her into his room.“There’s a proposal for marriage,” he said. She froze.

Her fingers slowly clenched.“I’m not interested,” she replied. Her father looked at her, surprised. “At least meet him.”“I said I’m not interested.”

Her voice didn’t shake. But something inside her did.

“You should at least hear the full thing before refusing.” She stayed silent.

“This is not just any proposal,” he continued. “It’s from the Malhotras.”

Her brows knit together. “Who?” she asked.

“Mr. Malhotra,” he clarified. “You’ve heard right.”

“He wants to collaborate with our company,” her father went on. “A partnership.” “If this collaboration happens,” he said, his voice steady, almost calculated, “our industries will grow beyond anything we’ve seen. We won’t just expand… we’ll dominate.”Madhurima’s expression didn’t change, but her fingers slowly curled into her palm.

Then he added, more softly..“And he wants to make it permanent.” She looked at him now.

“And that’s why…” her voice was low, controlled, “you want me to marry his son.”“For business?” she asked.

“For the future,” he corrected.

Her eyes hardened slightly. “Whose future?” “Ours,” he said firmly. “This family’s.”

She let out a small, almost disbelieving breath. “I’m not a deal.”

“No one said you are,” he replied calmly. “The boy is well-educated, well-mannered. He has a good reputation. You won’t have a bad life.”

“That’s not the point.”

“Then what is the point?” his voice sharpened just a little.

She hesitated.For a second.Just a second.

But he noticed. And in that moment, something clicked in his mind. He didn't say anything he just looked at her and walked away.

Days passed. The pressure increased. Questions turned into suspicion. And then. One day.Truth stood right in front of Devraj Sharma (madhurima's father).

Madhurima With Vijay.

That was the moment everything broke. Her father didn’t shout. He didn’t create a scene. He simply walked away.

And called straight to Vijay.

“Leave her.” Devraj warned.

Vijay stood still.“No.”One word. But it carried everything.

Her father's expression hardened.“You don’t understand what you’re doing.”

“I understand enough,” Vijay replied.

“Then understand this,” his voice turned cold, “if you don’t leave her… I will make sure you regret it.”

Vijay didn’t step back. But life did.

Days later,He lost his job. Just like that.

No explanation.No warning.Only whispers.Money stopped.Struggles began.And in the middle of it.

His father(Vijay's father)fell sick.Vijay tried.God knows he tried.But trying doesn’t always save people.

One night He stood beside a still body. His father.Gone.The room felt empty. But not as empty as him. It snatched the life from Vijay.

Then came the final blow.

Her father met Bijoy again. This time, calm.Dangerously calm.

“If you want your mother to live peacefully,” he said, “you’ll end this.”

Bijoy’s heart stopped for a second. “Leave her,” he continued. “Or you lose what little you have left.”....!

Devraj went and left Vijay speechless. He stood still there thinking that how life is getting cruel to him day by day.

Days passed. After his father’s death, the house felt different.Too quiet.Every corner reminded Vijay of what he couldn’t save. His mother sat silently most of the time, her eyes tired, her body weaker than before. Medicines were needed. Money was needed.

Bijoy had nothing left to give.He tried.

Every day, he went out, searching for work.Every day, he came back with the same answer.Nothing.

At night, he would sit beside his mother as she slept, staring at the wall. And every night. His phone would light up.

Madhurima calling…He would look at it. His fingers would move. And then stop.Sometimes he picked up.Sometimes he didn’t.But even when he did

He wasn’t the same.

Then one night.. Finally he made up his mind and called Madhu. Madhurima picked up instantly.

“Vijay?I was just about to call you… but he interrupted, saying..“We need to end this.” Her smile froze.“…what?” she was shocked.

“I can’t do this anymore.”Her breath became uneven. “Stop joking.”

“I’m not.” Vijay said.

“No…” she shook her head, even though he couldn’t see. “Tell me the truth.”

“This is the truth.”Tears rolled down her cheeks.

“Come in front of me and say it.”But he didn’t come.Because he knew, If he saw her once…he wouldn’t be able to leave.

“Our worlds are different,” he said slowly. “We were never meant to last.”

Something inside her broke.

Completely.

“I hate you,” she cried. “I hate you for this.” Vijay closed his eyes.Holding onto those words.Letting them hurt.

Because it was easier if she hated him.

Easier than knowing the truth.

“I think…” his voice almost gave up,“you should move on.”

The call ended.

And just like that.

A love that once felt endless…

ended without a goodbye.

Flashback ended.

The memory shattered as a soft voice filled the cabin.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we will be landing shortly.”

Madhu opened her eyes. For a second, she didn’t know where her life is taking her. Then reality returned. The baby stirred slightly in her arms. She looked down at her.

So small.

So unaware.

Her grip tightened...!!
